The study reports that "poor long-term blood sugar control in diabetics is associated with a substantial increase in the risk of dying from ischemic heart disease -- the type of heart disease characterized by restricted blood flow to the arteries of the heart." While those diabetics who had poor long-term blood sugar control had four times greater risk of dying from ischemic heart disease, those diabetes patients who had "reasonably good" blood sugar had the same levels of risk as the control group. Thus, controlling blood sugar can keep risk for ischemic heart disease at bay, with no more risk than someone without diabetes.
This study highlights the importance of proper glucose control in reducing coronary complications in diabetics, while at the same time improving overall health.
